KABUL, Feb. 15 – Ambassador Ilham Mohammadov of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Kabul held an introductory meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi, during which he presented an official letter from Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the opening of an embassy in Kabul.

The meeting encompassed discussions on initiating diplomatic relations between Afghanistan and Azerbaijan, fostering economic cooperation, and various other topics.

 

Minister Muttaqi referred to the opening of the Azerbaijani embassy in Kabul, along with the appointment of an ambassador-level diplomat, as a significant milestone in bilateral relations. He hailed it as a positive indication of friendship between Afghanistan and Azerbaijan.

 

Muttaqi expressed that the historical ties between the two nations are profound, extending a warm welcome to Ambassador Mohammadov and assuring him that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is prepared to provide necessary assistance to the Azerbaijani Embassy in Kabul. Highlighting the importance of the Lajorda route, the foreign minister emphasized its potential in connecting Afghanistan to Europe, underscoring its special significance.

 

Furthermore, Muttaqi expressed the desire of the Islamic Emirate to enhance the level of diplomatic presence in the Afghan Embassy located in Baku.

 

Ambassador Mohammadov reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s respect for Afghanistan’s sovereignty and independence, emphasizing that Azerbaijan does not interfere in Afghanistan’s internal affairs. He expressed gratitude for Afghanistan’s consistent support of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity. The ambassador acknowledged that this marks the first-ever opening of the Azerbaijani embassy in Kabul, commending the Afghan government’s achievements in terms of security, stability, counter-narcotics efforts, and economic development.

 

Mohammadov highlighted the potential for fruitful cooperation between the two countries across various sectors, underscoring the mutual benefits that can be derived from such collaboration.
