NANGARHAR, Feb. 10 –  A three-day international conference on climate change started at Nangarhar University today with the presence of esteemed national officials. The event aims to showcase research papers and articles on climate change, intending to utilize the findings at both national and international levels.

Deputy Governor of Nangarhar, Mawlawi Saeed Ahmed Banuri, extended a warm welcome to the conference participants and emphasized the importance of addressing the climate situation in the province. He highlighted the impact of the environment and climate on the region while urging focused attention on this matter.

Minister Sheikh Nada Mohammad Nadeem identified occupation, industrialized nations, and international negligence as significant causes of Afghanistan’s climate change. He condemned the discriminatory attitude of the international community, considering it to be cruel.

Political deputy Prime Minister, Mawlawi Abdul Kabir, revealed that approximately one and a half million people in the country suffer from respiratory diseases due to air pollution and climate change. He provided updates on ongoing projects.

Prof. Dr. Khalil Ahmed Behsudwal, President of Nangarhar University, shared that Afghanistan ranks third in terms of climate change impact. He delivered comprehensive information on the factors contributing to climate change and suggested preventive measures. He reassured that the conference articles would be utilized for positive climate change.

Various officials, including Sheikh Al-Hadith Noorul Haq Anwar (Chief of Affairs), Dr. Lutfullah Khairkhah (Academic Deputy of Ministry of Higher Education), Engineer Ruhollah Amin (Chief of Climate Change of National Environment Agency), Maulvi Attaullah Omari (Minister of Agriculture), Abdul Latif Mansoor (Minister of Water and Energy), and Mullah Muhammad Abbas Akhund (Minister of Preparedness) shared their actions and plans for promoting positive environmental and climate changes in the country.

Dr. Jonathan Neale, a researcher and university professor, emphasized in his speech that the causes of drought and climate change in Afghanistan are global, and those responsible should be held accountable. He called upon the international community to grant Afghans their rights and take appropriate measures to combat drought.

Dr. Hamid Al-Shinji, a researcher from Yemen, concluded the event by highlighting the clear statements about climate change in the Holy Quran, emphasizing the importance of paying attention to them. He further emphasized the significant role of water in climate change and shared specific instructions related to water management.
