BADGHIS, Jan. 17 – A strong earthquake struck about 40 km (25 miles) east of Qala-e-Naw, the capital of western Badghis province Afghanistan.

The magnitude-5.3 earthquake caused heavy casualties in the area.

At least 12 people were killed and a number of the houses were destroyed in the powerful earthquake, according to local sources.

The aftershocks could reportedly be felt in Mashhad city, Iran.

Similarly, Moulana Saleh Pur Dil, the district governor of Qadis district of the province has feared that the death toll will exceed 12.

The Islamic Emirate sources in Badghis confirmed that 26 civilians were killed, while some news media also reported of 15 injuries.
