The Deputy Prime Minister for Political Affairs of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, Mawlawi Abdul Kabir, held a meeting today with the EU Special Representative for Afghanistan, Thomas Nicholson, along with his delegation. Veronika Bošović-Pohar, the EU’s Chargé d’Affaires in Kabul, was also present at the meeting.
During the discussion, Mr. Nicholson commended the advancements in Afghanistan and highlighted the strong ties between the Islamic Emirate and the European Union. He emphasized the Islamic Emirate’s effective efforts in combating drug trafficking, fostering peace, eliminating corruption, and fighting against narcotics.
The EU Special Representative underscored the importance of international institutions joining hands with the Islamic Emirate to address drug-related issues in Afghanistan, emphasizing the need for initiatives in alternative farming practices and addiction treatment. Additionally, he mentioned the European Union’s plan to provide 45 million euros in aid to Afghan farmers through global partner organizations in the near future.
Mr. Thomas Nicholson stressed the significance of granting European Union personnel access to all regions of Afghanistan to facilitate aid distribution. He also mentioned discussions with neighboring nations to halt the involuntary repatriation of Afghan refugees.
The Deputy Prime Minister Mawlawi Abdul Kabir expressed gratitude to the European Union for its support to Afghanistan, particularly highlighting the recent aid in alternative farming. He informed the delegation about the establishment of a dedicated commission by the Islamic Emirate to combat drugs and alcohol effectively, ensuring compliance with commitments.
Furthermore, Deputy Prime Minister Mawlawi Abdul Kabir mentioned the Islamic Emirate’s efforts in providing rehabilitation for addicts from the previous administration, offering them employment opportunities and vocational training for successful reintegration into society as entrepreneurs.
He emphasized the essential role of aid organizations, including the European Union, in supporting Afghan refugees and called for neighboring and other countries to cease the forced deportation of Afghan nationals.
