During a media briefing at the Government Media and Information Center, representatives from the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum presented a detailed overview of the ministry’s activities throughout the previous year.

Key accomplishments encompassed the examination of 647 mining sites across 28 provinces, the digitization of geological maps at various scales, and the generation of employment opportunities.

Officials disclosed the signing of 80 small-scale mining agreements with local investors and the annulment of 10 such contracts. The ministry presently oversees 167 active small-scale mining agreements valued at AFN 10 billion, fostering numerous direct and indirect job placements.

Over the reporting period, 52 mineral processing licenses were issued, alongside the establishment of a legal framework for the extraction and processing of precious stones to combat illicit mining and smuggling activities.

Significant progress was highlighted in Panjshir province, with the identification of 1,700 emerald mining sites, the issuance of 575 extraction licenses, and the creation of 15,000 employment opportunities.

Approximately 78,000 carats of emeralds were auctioned for around $5.5 million to domestic and global investors. The ministry also initiated 13 large-scale mining ventures across various provinces, fueling job growth.

Currently, major mining projects are ongoing in multiple provinces, with additional initiatives planned for development. Contracts for a salt mine in Faryab and a rock salt mine in Takhar have been secured by local companies.

Oil extraction operations in certain regions are producing 1,300 tons of crude oil daily, employing 3,000 workers. Collaborations with a Turkish firm for gas field development in Jawzjan exhibit the ministry’s commitment to resource expansion.

Regulatory frameworks such as the Mining Law, Hydrocarbons Law, and Land Acquisition Law for the TAPI project have been drafted for review. Progress has been made on procedural frameworks, with several finalized and others in the pipeline.

Last year, eight memoranda of understanding were signed to enhance operational efficiency. Current objectives include mineral assessments, investment attraction, tender announcements for mining projects, legislative finalizations, and infrastructure project facilitation.
