Following the re-establishment of the Islamic Emirate in Afghanistan, initial expectations were that the regime would be short-lived, and that no foundational efforts would be made to advance Afghanistan from its current state toward a more prosperous future. Factors such as the freezing of reserves, the suspension of development aid, and attempts to isolate Afghanistan were key contributors to these doubts among the people.
Contrary to these assumptions, the Islamic Emirate has undertaken substantial initiatives in various sectors, particularly with the implementation of critical infrastructure projects. The current administration is committed to minimizing Afghanistan’s dependency on external resources by designing and executing national and infrastructural projects that create economic opportunities, enhance public welfare, and steer the country toward economic self-sufficiency.
In the past three years, the government has made significant progress, and efforts continue to take practical steps toward the advancement and strengthening of Afghanistan’s social, cultural, economic, political, and security sectors.
One noteworthy initiative is the 10-megawatt (MW) solar power project in the Naghlu area of Surobi District in Kabul Province. This project, recently launched by the Ministry of Water and Energy with financial backing from the private sector, is now fully operational.
The project, with a generation capacity of 10 MW, aims to enhance domestic electricity production, leverage readily available resources for power generation, and attract further investments. The survey and design phases were carried out by Afghan engineers, and the project, with a total cost exceeding $7.6 million, was implemented over a 10-month period by the private firm Aufi Bahram, under the supervision of the Ministry of Water and Energy.
Key benefits of this project include increasing domestic electricity generation, reducing Afghanistan’s dependence on imported power, boosting national revenue, creating job opportunities, supporting industrial development, and providing electricity to approximately 10,000 households.
The project is expected to deliver significant social and economic benefits, including:
• Increased Domestic Energy Capacity: This project enhances the domestic energy production capacity, ensures a reliable electricity supply to the covered areas, and improves the overall quality of life for residents.
• Job Creation: The project has generated employment opportunities for both skilled and unskilled workers, contributing to improved family incomes and livelihoods.
• Reduced Energy Costs: By lowering electricity costs for local communities and industries, the project plays a crucial role in fostering economic resilience and stability.
• Attraction of Investment: The implementation of this project creates an attractive environment for further investment, potentially leading to similar projects and generating additional employment and economic opportunities in the country.
• Environmental Impact Mitigation: This project reduces environmental harm in the area, providing a safe and secure environment for local residents while demonstrating the government’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.
• Community Engagement: The project encourages community participation, offering opportunities for local residents to actively contribute to the project’s implementation and ongoing success.
• Public Awareness: As projects like this have significant positive impacts on the socio-economic lives of the people, this initiative will promote greater public awareness of the importance of preserving and maintaining such infrastructure.
The Naghlu 10 MW solar power project stands as a successful model for future initiatives of its kind across Afghanistan. The project not only facilitates greater investment but also plays a vital role in advancing Afghanistan toward long-term economic self-sufficiency, while reducing reliance on imported electricity.
This initiative is more than a technical achievement; it is a beacon of hope for a brighter future. Projects like this will empower the government to drive progress toward economic independence, sustainable energy security, environmental stewardship, industrial and agricultural growth, and overall improvement in the quality of life for the Afghan people.
