During his second day of the working visit to Turkmenistan, Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi engaged in a fruitful discussion with Deputy Minister of Transport Affairs Mohammad Khan Chakiyev, says Hafiz Zia Ahmad Takal the deputy spokeman of the ministry.

The meeting focused on enhancing transportation links between Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, increasing the railway capacity at Turkmenbashi port, and providing enhanced facilities for Afghan traders at Turkmenbashi port.

Minister Muttaqi emphasized the strategic importance of Turghandi Port, which serves as a vital connection point between Afghanistan and Turkmenistan through highways and railways. He expressed Afghanistan’s readiness to expand the capacity of Turghandi port with Turkmenistan’s investment in order to boost trade and transit between the two countries. Muttaqi also highlighted the significance of collaboration among partner countries, including efforts to revitalize the Lajorda route, in line with their shared strategic goals.

Minister Muttaqi stated that with improved security and a responsible government in place, Afghanistan’s economy-oriented foreign policy aims to connect the region, with a specific focus on Afghanistan, and reviving transportation routes is a key priority.

In response, Deputy Minister Chakiyev acknowledged the progress being made between the two countries in various fields, particularly in transportation, and expressed gratitude for Afghanistan’s provision of necessary land in Torghandai for Turkmenistan’s investment. He revealed that once the contract between the railway agencies of Afghanistan and Turkmenistan is signed, Turkmenistan will commence construction works to enhance the railway station’s capacity in Turghandi.

Chakiyev emphasized the importance of the Lajordo route and proposed convening a meeting of the five countries along the route, including Afghanistan, to comprehensively discuss ways to revitalize this significant transportation corridor. He also reaffirmed Turkmenistan’s commitment to training Afghan technicians in the field of railways and expressed readiness to invest in the Targhandi railway station following the acquisition of necessary technical information and agreement.

Chakiyev mentioned that next week, during the visit of Afghanistan’s Minister of Industry and Trade to meet with businessmen, he will also visit Turkmenbashi port.
