The Political Deputy Prime Minister, Mawlawi Abdul Kabir, held a meeting with Mrs. Hai Kyung Joon, the head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for Asia and the Pacific, along with Mr. Leonard Zulu, the agency’s representative in Afghanistan, and their delegation, says ARG in a statement on X.
During the meeting, Mrs. Joon expressed her satisfaction with her visit to Afghanistan and reaffirmed UNHCR’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by Afghan refugees and continuing to provide assistance.
She emphasized the importance of supporting the reintegration of returning refugees into Afghan society and stated that UNHCR assists all refugees coming back to Afghanistan from exile. Mrs. Joon mentioned that she will present a report at the upcoming refugee meeting in Geneva, where she will request additional aid for Afghan refugees and share the realities of the situation in Afghanistan with the international community.
She highlighted the difficult conditions faced by Afghan refugees, including poverty, unemployment, drought, and other natural disasters, and stressed the need for basic assistance in areas such as shelter, healthcare, education, and job opportunities.
Mrs. Joon emphasized the necessity of involving domestic and foreign institutions in strengthening Afghanistan’s economy and implementing essential projects for refugees and internally displaced people.
Mawlawi Abdul Kabir, the Political Deputy of the Prime Minister, expressed gratitude for the assistance and cooperation provided by UNHCR and other aid agencies to Afghan refugees. He requested the continuation of this support and acknowledged that addressing issues of hunger, poverty, and unemployment inherited from the previous regime would require significant time and resources. He highlighted the challenges faced by the Afghan people due to prolonged wars, droughts, and natural disasters, underscoring the need for increased humanitarian aid.
The Political Deputy emphasized that the world should not overlook the human side of Afghanistan’s current situation. He expressed concern over neighboring countries forcibly deporting Afghan refugees during a time when Afghanistan is grappling with severe natural disasters and challenges. Maulawi Abdul Kabir asserted that Afghan refugees have no role in the insecurity of Pakistan, yet they face severe difficulties in that country, with many innocently detained in jails. He called for allowing Afghan refugees to voluntarily return to their home country and for necessary preparations to be made for their reception. He also urged international aid organizations to assist Afghan refugees and internally displaced people in finding permanent shelter and employment.
The Political Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the Islamic Emirate’s efforts to create job opportunities through major infrastructure projects and economic development initiatives.
Maulvi Abdul Kabir expressed his disappointment that the issue of Afghan refugees and the prevailing circumstances in Afghanistan did not receive adequate attention during the recent meeting in Doha. He pointed out that even the Secretary General of the United Nations did not address the issue of aid collection or the continuation of the refugee phenomenon.
Mawlawi Abdul Kabir criticized the promotion of illegal immigration, attributing it to reports from the United Nations and other international organizations that are based on false information.
He emphasized that significant progress has been achieved in Afghanistan, including the eradication of drug production and trafficking, the provision of treatment for drug addicts, and efforts to strengthen the economy. He also highlighted the successful efforts in ending extortion and corruption.
