In 2017, thousands of our innocent countrymen including children, women and men were martyred, crippled and wounded in the blind bombing, brutal night raids, drone strikes and indiscriminate artillery shelling of the savage foreign invaders as well as their internal mercenaries. Civilian houses, shops and local bazaars (market places) were destroyed. Schools, madrassas, educational institutions and public clinics were bombarded and demolished. Similarly, thousands of innocent civilians were incarcerated on the lame excuse of having contacts with Taliban, as they were tortured and agonized both in known and unknown detention centers.

Particularly, with the announcement of new strategy of Donald Trump, indiscriminate bombing and brutal night raids have increased significantly. As acknowledged and confirmed by Pentagon, only in September 2017, the record 715 bombs were dropped on the villages and towns of Afghanistan, while in the first twenty days of last December, 751 air attacks have been carried out. In all these strikes and attacks, heavy losses and casualties were inflicted on the innocent and defenseless civilian people; places of public welfare were destroyed, and huge financial losses were suffered by the already destitute people of Afghanistan.

The substandard conditions of jails and prisoners in 2017:

The savage foreign invaders as well as the stooge Kabul admin, both conduct the detainees contrary to all prisoners and human rights conventions, as prisoners are unceasingly tortured and agonized in various brutal ways, and they are jailed and kept in severely substandard conditions without any trial or formal indictment.

It is unfortunate that human rights societies and organizations have not played their due role in solving the miseries of prisoners, by adopting complete silence despite this cruel and unhuman behavior of authorities. Only in a few cases they have reacted, though very late.

In various parts of the country, the savage foreign invaders and their internal stooge admin have built known and secret detention centers. Bagram, Pul-i-Charkhi, and Kandahar jails are the well-known centers. No national or international law and human rights conventions are respected or observed in all the prisons whether managed by the savage foreign invaders or by their internal stooge authorities. Incessant agonies of prisoners, their mental torture, corruption, poor nutrition, unhygienic atmosphere and lack of adequate doctors and medicines are the common issues of all jails inside Afghanistan.

Particularly, in Bagram jail the prisoners are living in terribly shocking conditions. They are forced to wear a uniform totally against their Islamic and Afghan values and culture. Their meetings with their families are unreasonably delayed and denied for months. They are suffering from mal-nutrition and their food is substandard qualitatively, therefore they are suffering from various diseases. Shortage of doctor and medicines, no possibility of exercise and walking, their verbal abuse by jail security, making noise and resistance in time of prayers, providing no chance of study and positive activity, all these issues depict the miserable prevailing conditions in the notorious Bagram Jail.

It has been clearly stated in the recently published report of the ‘Transparency International’ that the prisoners are inhumanly treated in jails inside Afghanistan, by adding that in the recent past this unhuman conduct has reached its maximum, and the prisoners are not given their internationally established and accepted rights.

This organ has stated by citing the situation in Pul-i-Charkhi, Maidan-Wardak and Baghlan provinces jails that the incarcerated people have no access to hygienic water, food, medicine and other items of basic needs. A number of prisoners whose detention period has elapsed, are still living in jails. The next serious issue is that the number of prisoners is double than the accommodation capacity of these jails, whereas the structures are so substandard that they can collapse or catch fire any time. In general, these jails have turned into the violation centers of human rights and their dignity.

Though all prisoners are suffering from the unhuman and brutal behavior of the savage foreign invaders and their internal stooge authorities, but the case of political prisoners is even worse, where the violation of Geneva conventions and all other human rights agreements is at peak. There are prisoners who are detained for more than a decade but nothing has been proved or provided against them yet, to formally indict them. Most of these prisoners are incarcerated merely on basis of suspicion or accusation and have been detained for years in the dark cells of these notorious jails.

Another big issue is that like all other organs of the puppet regime, corruption is at peak even in their jails, in which a huge mafia of judges, attorneys and lawyers is deeply involved. Verified murderers, thieves and the biggest violators of human rights are set free for money, but helpless and miserable prisoners are kept there for years.
