During a press briefing held at the Government Media and Information Center, officials from the Directorate General of the Olympic Committee, Physical Education, and Sports presented their annual performance review.
They highlighted that in the previous year, a total of 4,000 promotional, ceremonial, and official competitions were conducted nationwide. Afghan athletes took part in 98 international and regional contests, collectively earning 92 medals, comprising 22 gold, 30 silver, and 40 bronze.
The officials underscored several notable accomplishments, including the attainment of 5 medals at the Asian Olympic Games, the national futsal team’s qualification for the World Cup, the U-17 national football team’s triumph in the CAFA (Central Asian Football Association) tournament, and the national taekwondo team’s victory in the G2 competitions.
They emphasized significant progress in advancing sports within the country, such as organizing the third round of national volleyball competitions, the fifth season of the Buzkashi League, the third seasons of football and futsal leagues, and the second season of the Ghorsai League.
Afghan athletes secured the runner-up position in the 14th round of the Eurasian Games, competing against representatives from 12 Asian nations. The Afghan contingent excelled by clinching 9 gold, 4 silver, and 5 bronze medals.
The officials noted oversight of 191 competitions across 35 sports federations in the past year, with 450 athletes benefiting from educational seminars and training sessions.
Future priorities include bolstering the country’s sports infrastructure, facilitating Afghan athletes’ engagement in global and regional competitions, hosting national sporting events, establishing partnerships with the Ministry of Education and Kabul Municipality, conducting capacity-building initiatives, and broadcasting competitions through national media channels.
