During a press briefing at the Government Media and Information Center, officials from the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development unveiled their annual performance review.
As per the ministry’s spokespersons, in the previous year, a total of 266 water supply undertakings were executed across 251 hamlets in 149 districts spanning 34 provinces, with a cumulative investment of 1 billion AFN. This initiative has granted 1,525,400 inhabitants access to potable water.
Additionally, authorities disclosed that another 149 water supply initiatives are presently in progress. Once finalized, these projects will provide clean drinking water to an extra 664,916 individuals.
Furthermore, within the past year, the completion and launch of 100 check dams and minor water reservoirs, involving a collective investment of 426 million AFN, occurred in various provinces such as Badghis, Baghlan, Balkh, Parwan, Paktia, Zabul, Sar-e-Pul, Farah, Kapisa, Kunduz, Nuristan, Nimroz, and Herat.
The officials also highlighted the development of several kilometers of rural roads across 51 districts in 23 provinces, alongside ongoing efforts encompassing 388 kilometers of roads in diverse provinces. Noteworthy is the ongoing construction of a 50-kilometer road in Badakhshan province’s Wakhan district, intended to establish a vital connection between Afghanistan and China.
Moreover, it was revealed that feasibility studies for the Kaj Satar Dam project in Nimroz province and design undertakings for a water dam in Farah province’s Golestan district are currently underway, with construction set to commence shortly.
Emphasizing the significance of the Golestan Dam in Farah province, officials detailed its planned storage capacity of 140 million cubic meters of water, with a projected irrigation scope of roughly 14,000 hectares of agricultural land in Chakhansur, Ghory, Khashrud, and Delaram districts.
Similarly, a dam is being built in Badghis province’s Qadis district at a total investment of 2.5 million US dollars. This venture is slated to irrigate 1,400 hectares of agricultural land and provide potable water to local inhabitants.
Furthermore, progress updates were provided on the Qala-e-Naw water distribution network project, valued at 335 million AFN, which is in its final stages. Once operational, this venture will directly supply clean drinking water to 65,000 residents.
Lastly, officials disclosed that the construction of a 5-kilometer retaining wall in Kandahar province’s Spin Boldak district is at 95% completion. Valued at 75 million AFN, this significant initiative is poised to safeguard hundreds of thousands of hectares of agricultural land from seasonal floods.
