To address the connectivity gaps in 15 provinces, the Afghanistan Telecommunication Services Regulatory Authority (ATRA) under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has launched a significant initiative. A total of 149 communication sites, valued at approximately $14 million, are being constructed across 104 districts within the country.
During a press conference attended by officials from Afghan Telecom and Etisalat telecommunication companies, as well as media representatives, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, led by Minister Alhaji Maulvi Najibullah Hayat Haqqani, highlighted the importance of technological advancement. Minister Wazir emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to extending telecommunication services to underserved regions, noting the successful provision of such services over the past three years.
Under the 10th Total Access Project, which has received approval from the High Authority of the Ministry of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, the construction of communication sites is well underway. Notably, two lots of this project, valued at $32,814,136, have already commenced construction. Additionally, the third lot, targeting 15 provinces and 104 districts, will see the establishment of 149 telecommunication sites, with a contract valued at $13,857,681. Afghan Telecom secured 119 sites through the bidding process, while Etisalat won the contract for five sites.
Minister Hayat Haqqani urged telecom officials to adhere to agreements’ terms and regulations, warning of consequences for any violations. The Ministry remains dedicated to extending services to marginalized areas, ensuring market quality through regular assessments. Through the 10th Total Access Project, which identifies and approves 510 telecommunication sites, many underserved regions are poised to benefit from enhanced telecommunication and internet services upon project completion.
